And may the peace and blessing of Allah be upon the messenger of peace our prophet Mohammad, his honorable family, his blessed companions and all who follow his good example till the Day of Judgment, amen.

Honorable and respected elders and dearest brothers and sisters of our community,

On behalf of the Muslim American Society (MAS) & Masjid Es Salaam it is my pleasure to congratulate every one of you for the blessings of the month of Ramadan.

Abu Huraira reported the messenger of Allah as saying: “He who fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven; he who prays during the night in Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven; and he who passes Lailat al-Qadr in prayer with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven.” (al-Bukhari & Muslim)

Siyam (fasting) is one of the main pillars of Islam. It is mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah. In the Quran we read:

“Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you that you may (learn) self-restraint…” (2: 183).

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said “(The superstructure of) Islam is raised on five (pillars), the Oneness of Allah, the establishment of Prayer, payment of Zakah, the fast of Ramadan and the Pilgrimage (to Mecca).” (Muslim)

Fasting is the ultimate form of self-discipline for mankind, as it helps them control their desires and reconnect with their Lord; for whenever they sense the pangs of hunger and thirst, they will be elevated to the level of spiritual bliss, as if they were seeing Allah; and if not actually seeing Him, they would at least perceive that Allah is seeing them.

In fasting, both the poor and the rich experience the same deprivations, as they are overcome with hunger and thirst by the decree of Allah (SWT). This is the law that elevates mankind from enslavement to their desires to the level of those who control, and ultimately transcends, their desires. Mankind’s response to the guidance and law of fasting is to find the strength to say “No” in a powerful way. They remember how Adam lost his battle with the shaitan by neglecting the law of “Don’t”.

MAS is calling upon all our brothers and sisters in the community to grasp this opportunity and reconnect with Allah (SWT) by reciting the Holy Qura’n and visiting the local valley Masjids to participate in the night prayers (Taraweeh) and to spend generously for the sake of Allah.

During this blessed month we are calling on our community members to remember the less fortunate brothers and sisters in our community by donating non perishable food and hygiene items at our Center (address above) to be distributed to our local community’s needy families.

Also MAS Youth Department, MAS Boy Scout troops and the Quran and Arabic institute have put together a host of activities for the youth and children during the month of Ramadan.
